Structure a reader can skim

Most readers skim before they read. Give them something to skim: a first line per paragraph that carries the paragraph's point, headings that say what the section concludes rather than what it is about, and lists only where the items are genuinely parallel.

A useful test — read only the first sentence of every paragraph. If that alone conveys the argument, the structure is sound. If it reads as disconnected fragments, the structure is not fixable by editing sentences.
