Draft the statement of purpose and let it rest between drafts; it improves more from time than from effort. Ask for recommendation letters now, with a one-page brief for each recommender covering what you are applying for and what you would like them to speak to.

Collect transcripts and certificates in one folder, scanned properly. Cut the long list to six or eight real applications.
