Merit awards reward a documented pattern, not one good score. A committee is looking for evidence that you kept going at something: three years of the same activity beats twelve one-off certificates.

Need-based awards reward clear, complete, unembarrassed paperwork. The most common reason for losing one is an incomplete file, not an ineligible family.
