Funding comes from three places. University scholarships — the biggest pool by far, usually awarded automatically or by a short additional form at the point of admission. Government and public schemes — fewer, far more competitive, deadlines up to a year ahead. Private and community trusts — small, numerous, and chronically under-applied to.

Most families spend all their energy on pool two, which is the hardest, and ignore pools one and three.
