What the exam does not decide

It does not decide whether you can do the work. Institutions are full of people who entered on a modest rank and did well, and people who entered near the top and struggled, because the qualities the exam sorts on and the qualities the course rewards overlap only partly.

It also does not decide your final direction. Branch changes, lateral entry, postgraduate study and simply doing something adjacent are all ordinary. Treating one morning in one hall as the moment your life was fixed gives that morning far more authority than it has, and the people who recover fastest are the ones who never granted it that authority in the first place.
