Decide what the reader must do

Before writing anything — an assignment, an email, an application — finish this sentence: after reading, the reader should know or do X. If you cannot finish it, the piece has no shape yet and no amount of careful prose will give it one.

Then put X near the beginning. Academic training encourages building to the point; almost every other kind of reader wants the point first and the working afterwards.
