Tracking, briefly, and then stopping

Track everything for two weeks. Not forever — two weeks is enough to find out where the money is actually going, which is nearly always different from where you assumed, and after that detailed tracking becomes a chore that gets abandoned.

Then build the structure and stop tracking: one account for fixed costs that money moves into automatically, one for spending, and a small buffer somewhere less convenient to reach. Structure survives a bad week. Willpower does not.
