What actually disappears

Formal education supplies a great deal you never chose: a syllabus deciding what to learn and in what order, deadlines, somebody marking the work, and a cohort at the same stage as you. Leave, and all four vanish on the same day. What remains is intention, which is far weaker than it feels.

The failure this produces is not laziness. It is that people keep intending to learn a thing for years, because nothing is ever due and nobody ever checks. Naming the four missing pieces is the beginning of rebuilding them.
