What the first day is

The first day after a no is mostly not about the thing you did not get. It is the sudden absence of a future you had already partly moved into — the version of the year where this had worked. That is a real loss, and it explains why it lands harder than the objective size of the setback suggests it should.

It also passes. Not because the loss was small, but because a future you imagined has less hold than one you lived in. Knowing the shape in advance stops the intensity of day one being read as evidence about how much the thing mattered, or about you.
