What a ranking is really counting

Global ranking tables are mostly measuring research: how much a university publishes, how often that research gets cited, and how well-known it is among academics. Those are real things. They are also almost entirely about the postgraduate and faculty side of the institution.

Very little of a ranking measures the thing an undergraduate actually buys: teaching quality, class size, contact hours with faculty, or whether graduates get hired.
