Why the conversation goes wrong

Most career arguments at home are not really about the career. The parent is asking 'will you be safe and able to support yourself?' The student hears 'I don't trust your judgement.' Both are speaking honestly and neither is being heard.

Naming the actual worry out loud — security, cost, distance — moves the conversation further in five minutes than another hour of debating course names.
