When the honest answer is that it is not for you

Sometimes the right conclusion is that this course, or formal education at this moment, is not the way to get what you want. Some fields hire on demonstrated work. Some people learn far better while doing. Pretending otherwise to protect an institution's case is dishonest, and it is expensive for the person.

The test is not whether you enjoy it, because a good deal of it is not enjoyable. It is whether it is moving you toward something you can name, and whether the same money and years spent another way would get you there better. If you cannot answer, that is worth finding out before year two rather than after it.
