Collateral, co-signers and the family conversation

Larger loans are usually secured — against property, deposits, or a co-signing family member whose credit is genuinely on the line. Everyone signing should be able to state, out loud, what happens if repayment stops. If they cannot, the conversation is not finished.

Understand too what shrinks the borrowing: a scholarship, a cheaper city, a shorter route, a partly funded course. Every one of those reduces the principal, and reducing the principal is worth more than negotiating a fraction of a percent on the rate.
