What a moratorium is not

A moratorium usually pauses repayment, not interest. On most education loans interest continues to accrue during study and is added to the balance, so the amount you begin repaying is larger than the amount you borrowed.

The single question that reveals this: "at the end of the moratorium, what is the outstanding balance?" Ask for that figure, not the sanctioned figure. The gap between the two surprises almost everyone the first time they see it.
