Making the specificity real

"I read your 2024 paper on X and I did not follow how you handled Y" is specific. "I am very impressed by your esteemed work" is not, and reads as a template because it is one.

Specificity costs about fifteen minutes of reading. That fifteen minutes is the entire difference between an email that gets answered and one that does not, and it also means you will understand the reply when it arrives.
