The year in between, used rather than survived

An unplanned year is only wasted if nothing in it is legible afterwards. Work counts, and it is not a lesser option — a job demonstrates things a transcript cannot. So does a qualification that repairs the weak component, a role that produces a piece of work you can show, or a language you can evidence.

Decide in the first fortnight what the year has to produce, write it down, and put dates against it. The risk here is not laziness, it is drift, and drift is far easier to fall into when nobody is imposing a timetable on you. A year with two or three concrete outcomes in it makes a stronger application than the one that was turned down — and it is a better year to have lived.
